While we try to keep you on track with your wedding planning and we are SO excited for your big day, it’s important to remember what all this is really about… the marriage. You are not buying a gorgeous dress and renting a snazzy tuxedo for some nice pictures and a lovely party. While those things are wonderful, your wedding day is about so much more than that! You are preparing for the commitment of a lifetime to your best friend. Now THAT is something worth celebrating!

As you prepare for your wedding day, use these tips to help you stay focused on the marriage that begins as soon as you say, “I do.”

1. Keep dating. It’s easy to get so wrapped up in wedding details that you forget to continue enjoying time with the one you’re about to marry! Go on some dates, and try to keep the wedding talk to a minimum. Spending quality time with each other is one of the best ways to prepare for your life as man and wife.

2. Participate in marriage counseling. Signing up for marriage counseling does not mean you’ve “failed” as a couple. It doesn’t even mean you’re struggling! Counseling is a great way to have an open discussion about all the important topics in life… These conversations need to take place BEFORE your wedding, and having an hour or two set aside just for that will make your first year (and the years after that) so much more successful. Not to mention, you get a discount on your marriage license just for completing your counseling!

3. Celebrate the little things. When you’re preparing for a celebration as big as your wedding, it’s easy to belittle other victories throughout your engagement. A raise at work or the completion of a home renovation project may not feel as important compared to the excitement of the big day. But these are the things that will happen throughout your life as a married couple, and the two of you need to know how to celebrate and be thankful for even the littlest of things together!

When you stay focused on the marriage, and not just the wedding, your planning becomes much easier and stress-free. Yes, you may still get wrapped up in choosing the perfect invitations… But as long as you remember that those invitations will be the first thing declaring your marriage to all your loved ones, the color choice might not seem as crucial.
